Gayle’s Story
“The blessing of knowing I will be able
to provide the care she actually wants.”
A few years ago, I was asked to serve as a personal representative for my best friend of 35 years. She had no family, and her roommate and I expected to share the responsibilities without issue — we both knew her well and got along with each other. But when my friend became terminally ill, that assumption fell apart. Her roommate and I had very different ideas about what she would have wanted, and at a time when I wanted nothing more than to focus on our friendship and the love we shared, I found myself arguing over decisions I wasn't even certain about. After her passing, the grieving process was made even harder by those same conflicts. It was an experience so painful that I swore I would never agree to be a personal representative again.
Then a very special friend asked me to take on that role — and I didn't want to let her down.
I am grateful to say that everything about this experience has been different because I worked with Lighthouse Legacy Solutions. Using the process Julie developed, I feel genuinely comfortable and confident in my role. Rather than agonizing over what the right decisions might be or navigating conflict with others, I have something far more valuable: the assurance that I can be the true voice of my friend when she can no longer speak for herself.
While the process did require us to discuss difficult topics — end-of-life care, final wishes, and more — knowing exactly how my friend wants these things handled has lifted an enormous burden from my shoulders and replaced it with something unexpected: the blessing of knowing I will be able to provide the care she actually wants. Having a skilled, compassionate third party guide us through scenarios and considerations neither of us would have thought of on our own has given me a profound sense of peace.
Whatever the future holds, I can focus on my friendship and being present for her when it matters most.
